Sergeant Glenn H. Haas, Dawson County
Gothenburg Police Sergeant Glenn H. Haas was shot in the front lobby of the police department at about 3:15 a.m. on Monday, July 2, 1990. A local 17 year-old male who had earlier been cited for criminal mischief, had come to the police department asking to speak to an officer. Sgt. Haas, who was present but off-duty and in plainclothes, responded to the request and was shot as he stepped out of the office entrance and into the lobby. He was struck once with a 30.06 round fired from a rifle the suspect had hidden around a corner. Sgt. Haas was taken to the Gothenburg Hospital and later life-flighted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, where he passed away. The suspect was later arrested and convicted, and is serving a life sentence. Sergeant Haas was 42 years old and survived by his wife, Janet, and two children.  Janet's brother will also be listed in the Memorial. He was Deputy Sheriff Kenneth Wolf of Frontier County, who died of a heart attack suffered while on duty in 1997.
 

 
NE State Trooper George W. Amos, Dawson County
Nebraska State Trooper George W. Amos, Jr. was shot and killed at about 4:45 p.m. on Friday, April 20, 1973, while attempting to arrest a suspected drunk driver near Lexington on I-80. Investigators later learned that Amos was attempting to arrest the suspected drunk driver when a passenger also became involved in the struggle. The two suspects disarmed Trooper Amos and shot him once with his own service revolver. Two suspects, a married couple, were arrested near Gothenburg while attempting to escape. Amos was just 28 years old and was survived by his wife, Dolores, and two sons.
 

 
Deputy Sheriff Charles Mayes, Dawson County
Deputy Sheriff Charles Mayes was shot and killed at about 12:05 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, 1876, about 5 miles south of current day Lexington. Mayes was attempting to serve a writ of ejectment on a farmer at that location when the subject shot him once. The two men who accompanied Mayes subdued his killer and took him to jail. That night a crowd of masked men forced their way into the jail and took the doomed man to the courthouse. The killer was hung from the second floor railing. Deputy Mayes was 36 years old at the time of his death.
 

 
NE State Patrol Sergeant John T. Meistrell, Dodge County
Nebraska State Patrol Sergeant John T. Meistrell died at 11:40 a.m. on Friday, April 10, 1953, from injuries sustained in an automobile crash. Sgt. Meistrell was headed west on Highway #275 toward Hooper at about 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, when he lost control of his patrol car and struck a tree. Meistrell was hospitalized in critical condition until the time of his death. He was 43 years old and survived by his wife, Lillian, and two children.
 

 
Special Agent Norman G. Fowler, Dodge County
Union Pacific Railroad Special Agent Norman G. Fowler was shot and killed at about 9:00 p.m. on Monday, August 29, 1932 near Ames, Nebraska. Agent Fowler had been assigned to guard a shipment leaving from Fremont and was found alongside the tracks about a mile east of Ames. He had been shot in the head and chest with a .45 caliber handgun. Agent Fowler was 42 years old and survived by his wife.
