Chief of Police Charles E. Henning, Thayer County Hebron Chief of Police Charles E. Henning died on April 20, 1978, from complications related to a gunshot wound and subsequent stroke he suffered 10 years prior, on Thursday, April 24, 1968. Chief Henning was shot by one of two Iowa youths who Thayer County Sheriff Jim Johnson was attempting to arrest in connection with a crime spree. The shooting occurred near the intersection of Highway #81 and #136. Henning suffered a stroke as a result of the shooting, and was hospitalized for 10 years. Doctors attributed his death to the stroke caused by the shooting. Chief Henning was 72 years old and survived by his wife, Iona, and two sons. |

Sheriff Ivan R. Newell, Thurston County Sheriff Ivan R. Newell died at about 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, January 19, 1967, as a result of injuries suffered in a head-on crash. Sheriff Newell was a passenger in a car driven by State Deputy Sheriff Wallis Miller. The two officers were heading to a call in Macy at about 4:35 p.m. when a collision occurred about three miles west of Walthill on Highway #94. Cresting a hill, Miller suddenly came upon a vehicle driven by Alonzo Watson. Mr. Watson was pulling his car out onto the highway and Miller swerved to avoid striking him. At the same time, Mrs. J. Bodlak was headed home from her job in Walthill. She saw the patrol car with the lights flashing and pulled off the highway. Miller's patrol car struck Bodlak's car nearly head-on. Miller, Mrs. Bodlak, and Sheriff Newell were all taken by ambulance to the Pender Hospital. Newell was pronounced dead a short time after arriving. Sheriff Newell was sworn into office on January 5, 1967, just two weeks earlier. He was 46 years old and survived by his wife, Fern, and six children. |

Deputy Sheriff William Adams, Thurston County Deputy Sheriff William Adams was shot and killed at about 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 24, 1927, while attempting to take a jail escapee into custody. Deputy Adams died from a single gunshot wound to the chest he sustained at the Frank Lewis farm four miles north of Winnebago. Wesely Bradford had escaped Friday evening from the county jail, and Deputy Adams had received information that Bradford was hiding in the Lewis house. Adams was climbing through a window to search for the man, Bradofr shot him. The killer was captured a short time later. Deputy Adams was 54 years old and single at the time of his death. |

Marshal Albert L. Suverkrubbe, Washington County Ft. Calhoun Marshal Albert L. Suverkrubbe was shot at about 3:00 a.m. on Monday, December 5, 1932 while attempting to arrest two men suspected of burglary. When Suverkrubbe located a suspicious vehicle in town he attempted to make a stop and, as the subjects began to drive away, he fired at their vehicle. The suspects returned fire and struck the lawman once in the lower abdomen near his right hip. Marshal Suverkrubbe was taken to Covenant Hospital. Initially it was believed that he would survive, but infection set in and he died from the complications to the injury. Marshal Suverkrubbe was 46 years old and survived by his wife, Frances, and two sons. |

Police Officer James M. Richardson II, York County York Police Officer James M. Richardson II was shot and killed at about 10:35 p.m. on Friday, April 22, 1977, while responding to a disturbance call at 1520 Blackburn Ave. When Richardson arrived, he stepped out to assess the situation. He was shot near his parked patrol car and staggered about 25 feet before falling on the lawn of the Arbor Drive Baptist Church. A 17 year-old suspect was apprehended about an hour later near the York Middle School. Officer Richardson was 24 years old and single at the time of his death. |
