Sergeant Ron Phillips, Polk County
Sergeant Ron Phillips, a Polk County Deputy Sheriff, died on Monday, January 26, 2004, from a heart attack suffered after attempting to dig out his patrol car during a snow storm. Having made his "on duty" call, Sergeant Phillips became stuck in the snow and attempted to free the vehicle himself. He eventually called a tow truck, whose driver discovered Phillips slumped over in the front seat. Emergency personnel were immediately dispatched, however he was later pronounced dead at Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Health Center in Osceola. Sergeant Phillips was 56 years old and is survived by his wife, Jennifer and his two sons, Shannon and Matthew.
 

 
NE State Trooper Robert J. Chab, Richardson County
Nebraska State Trooper Robert J. Chab died at about 3:45 p.m. on Friday, January 6, 1984, about three miles east of Falls City on Highway #159 after being struck by a car driven by an elderly female. Trooper Chab and Trooper Don Shepard were assigned to conduct a traffic checkpoint at that location and had been working traffic prior to the collision. Chab was killed when the woman failed to heed the posted warnings and struck another car prior to striking Trooper Chab. She later stated she didn't see a trooper or the warning signs. Trooper Chab was 45 years old and survived by his wife, Theresa, and two sons.
 

 
Deputy Sheriff Raymond E. Timothy, Richardson County
Deputy Sheriff Raymond E. Timothy died at about 7:40 a.m. on Saturday, December 8, 1973, from injuries suffered when struck by a pickup truck on October 30, 1973. Deputy Timothy was filling in for Richardson County Sheriff L.D. Camblin who was out of town at the time. He'd been called to the scene of another accident located about 2 1/2 miles west of Falls City on Highway #8 and was directing traffic when struck. Deputy Timothy was hospitalized for his injuries until the time of his death. He was 67 years old and survived by his wife, Shari, and three children.
 

 
Special Agent Benjamin J. Kelly, Richardson County
Missouri Pacific Special Agent Benjamin J. Kelly was shot at about 9:45 p.m. on Friday, March 11, 1932, near Salem, Nebraska, as he and two other officers searched for suspects involved in stealing copper wire. Agent Kelly and others were informed that thieves were stealing the wire from telephone lines and the lawmen went to investigate. Kelly and U.P. Special Agent Oscar Peterson, along with Richardson County Sheriff's Deputy Ivan Weltmer, observed a car as it pulled out of a dead-end lane on the J. M. Wickham farm. As the officers pulled up along side the suspects' car, shots were fired and Kelly was hit while seated in the passenger seat. He died about 30 minutes later. Agent Kelly was 56 years old and survived by his wife and two children.
 

 
Marshal Alphonso J. Wake, Richardson County
Rulo City Marshal Alphonso J. Wake was shot and killed at about 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 27, 1900, by a subject he had escorted from a bar in town. Marshal Wake had gone to Kanaly's Saloon and encountered several men causing a disturbance. When Marshal Wake instructed the men to calm down, one of them refused and threatened the lawman. Marshal Wake escorted the man outside and was talking to him when the man suddenly pulled a hidden gun and fired. Wake collapsed and died. The suspect escaped but later returned and was captured. Marshal Wake was 55 years old and survived by his wife and seven children.
 

 
Officer Benjamin F. Stump, Richardson County
Falls City Officer Benjamin F. Stump died at about 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 16, 1899, from a single gunshot wound received at about 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 19, 1899. Officer Stump had gone to the Missouri Pacific Depot, as was his custom, to meet the train when it arrived. While waiting for the train, Stump began to check box cars and picked up two tramps. He began escorting them from the yard. Stump stopped again and discovered someone in car #5763. He shined his lantern into the car and called for the person to come forward. Without warning a shot rang out. Officer Stump was struck in the forehead and fell to the ground. He was able to make it to the depot where help was summoned. It was later learned that Officer Stump was struck with a .32 caliber round. He survived for nearly a month before dying. Officer Stump was 22 years old and single.
 

 
Officer James H. Ray, Scotts Bluff County
Gering Officer James H. Ray died from injuries he received in a crash involving his patrol car and a water truck on Friday, August 7, 1959. Officer Ray was assisting the driver of the water truck in locating the road to Melbeta, Nebraska. Ray was in front of the truck and signaled a turn into the Circle S Motel when the driver misunderstood the signal and began passing the patrol car. As Ray turned left the truck struck his car and both vehicles went into the ditch. Officer Ray was trapped in the vehicle and died from his injuries. He was 62 years old and survived by his wife, Alma, and daughter.
 

 
Officer Albert W. Peterson, Scotts Bluff County
Scottsbluff Officer Albert W. Peterson was shot at about 9:45 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25, 1923, in Mitchell, Nebraska. Officer Peterson and Scotts Bluff County Deputy Sheriff Carlson went to Mitchell to look for a man named Frank Randall who was wanted in connection with a bootlegging operation. Arriving at a residence, the officers heard someone leaving through the back door. They observed a subject standing near a garage and called out to him. The man responded by firing two shots at the lawmen, the first striking Peterson in the stomach. The second shot passed through both of Carlson's forearms, crippling him. Peterson was taken into the house and a doctor was summoned. He died at about 10:20 p.m. Officer Peterson was 43 years old and survived by his wife, Bina.
 

 
Officer Gregory A. Holloway, Sheridan County
Gordon Officer Gregory A. Holloway was killed instantly at about 1:25 a.m. on Sunday, November 28, 1999, when his patrol car was struck nearly head-on with a pickup truck. Officer Holloway was responding to a report of an accident east of Gordon when the collision occurred. The driver of the pickup truck was westbound and making a left turn into a parking lot when the two vehicles collided. Officer Holloway was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck was later arrested and charged in connection with Holloway's death. Officer Holloway was 36 years old and survived by his wife and four children.
 

 
Officer John Red Horse, Sheridan County
Department of the Interior and Pine Ridge Tribal Officer John Red Horse was killed on Thursday, November 15, 1894, in Rushville, Nebraska, while attempting to intervene in a disturbance between two men. Officer Red Horse had gone into one of the lodges at the camping ground when he heard the disturbance. He found two men fighting and stepped between them. One of the men suddenly picked up a piece of wood and struck Red Horse. He fell to the ground and the man dropped the piece of wood. The other man then picked it back up and beat Red Horse to death. Both men were later captured and tried for the murder of Officer Red Horse.
